When I start a painting I always have something that serves as a starting off point. It could be an image of a place but more often its something more elusive like a memory of a certain time, a story, the light at a certain time of day or a conversation. It is a beginning.

Once I start painting the journey takes over and I follow the brush rather than trying to stick to any preconceived ideas. It is the mark making that excites me. Even in my more representational work it is the process that is the interesting part. I like exploring texture and colour , especially tone in colour. I work in mixed media, including acrylics oil, and inks.

The paintings are built up in layers, a process of concealing and revealing. I like the unexpected things that happen along the way, sort of working their way in, uninvited as it were. What I am striving for is a painting that says what I want to say, communicates some of that to the viewer and draws them so they keep coming back, curious to explore more.
